Two 360's and 1 Profile.. what is a gamer to do?

So, we finally got a 360 at work (man, what took them so long???).

So, I want to be able to play using my profile at work and at home (so when I beat teal's score on GW RE it is recorded). I was thinking you just connect and everything works... not so fast my friend.

Searching the web it seems that you need to move your profile to a memory card and transport it to and fro. My question is, has anyone successfully done this? Why can't you just use your online profile? Why must I store stuff on the memory card?

Because Microsoft wants you to buy more stuff for your 360. I tried just putting my hard drive in my friends 360 and some of my saves wern't there. For example when we played DOA4 I didn't have all my characters.
