Not quite what you're talking about, but Epyx's Impossible Mission , released in 1984, had a sort of Time of Day system where at the start of the game you had 6 real-time hours to finish the game. Every time you lost a man (usually accompanied by a blood-curdling scream as you fell down an lift shaf...

This is very cool. I wish someone would market this, cause I would buy it.

Re: Just Cause

Anyone else check out this demo yet? My initial reaction was that there is a lot of variety in the game. From stealing cars, performing stunts, parachuting, flying a helicopter, etc. The environment seems fairly expansive and detailed. My biggest issue is that there really isn't any challenge to th...

I had Commando for the C64. Played that sucker like a madman. I believe the repeating music theme has been permanently etched into my brain.

I was laughing at the end there too. I think your voice recognition software is psychopathic, considering its obsession with killing things!

Re: CLIFFHANGER and FREEDOM FIGHTER LD games

I really enjoyed the story, and it had some really great comedic parts with good character development (unlike the others). That's true... Dirk from Dragon's Lair just kept bumbling around that castle in the same clumsy manner no matter how many times he died horribly, no character development ther...

I definitely need to start collecting Lupin III... there's a boxed collection of the TV series out, and I need to pick up Cagliostro too. My only exposure to Lupin was under his alias Cliff Hanger, and I've nothing but great things about the series.

If you want to wallow in the currently sad state of arcade gaming today, check this out, one of my favourite articles from the great X-Entertainment called "The Worst Game Room Ever!".

Paperboy was a pretty amazing game. Not only did the visuals look great using Atari's amazing System II hardware, but the game play itself had that quality where the game was very difficult to master, but if you got in the zone and used the Force, you could fly through it without a scratch. It was e...

That's interesting about Alcorn. Sort of on subject: I'd recommend reading Fire in the Valley , which is a great history of the making of the personal computer, with a focus on the relationship between Jobs and Wozniak (as well as the making of Microsoft). I'd even recommend the cable movie they mad...

Re: The Great Woz Tells All

Woz recently did an interview with MacNewsWorld. In it, he mentions that he has a book coming out this fall. This fall, Wozniak will publish his memoir, I Woz: How I Invented the Personal Computer and Had Fun Along the Way, written with tech journalist Gina Smith (Norton). An interesting tidbit fro...

Re: Carmack QuakeCon Keynote Highlights

http://www.planetquake4.net/article.php?sid=2180 * id is branching out in a different direction for their new title which they expect to be a blockbuster. * id's next game has "a lot of people in it". I can see it now. Doom meets GTA. Running around the streets of Mars City with a railgun. Sweet.

The passing of Looking Glass is, for my money, the most heart-breaking PC game story of woe. Looking Glass were making THE BEST games for the PC during their tenure. And to see what happened with Deus Ex: Invisible War just adds salt to those wounds. Thief: Deadly Shadows mitigates this a bit, but s...
