360 & Window Medial Player 11 -

Post by iamsjn » Thu Nov 02, 2006 5:30 pm

Now this is just plain cool.
I just upgraded to Windows Media Player 11. With this, you now have the ability to stream content (video content) from a PC down to your 360! I've got a machine upstairs running XP SP2 with WMP11. From downstairs, I can stream video (The Ant And The Aardvark cartoons tucked into My Shared folder) from my PC to my 360 and out my TV!

I am sooooo turned on right now.

Huh? I don't get it, how does that work? Please post some more detailed instructions. Where in the 360 does that show up?

I have been streaming WMV to the 360 watching a bunch of podcasts, etc. It is awesome. I also converted some files to WMV (it will be nice when they support more formats).

You just need to run "Windows Media Connect" on your PC. With the new dashboard update, go into the videos, and have it show the ones on your PC (the ones hosted by WMC). Then, just click and it will stream.

It might be worth getting a 360 just for this. It only plays .wmv right ?

Right now it is only .WMV. However, there was a rumor floating around that within a month or so they are going to add Xvid and DivX support... we shall see.

For now you can send those formats using a transcoder, however it requires Windows Media Center edition:

I also have converted some videos using:

I was actually surprised at how well this works. My 360 connects to my network via the wireless accessory. My AP is upstairs and the 360 is downstairs. It runs flawlessly. This is what I was counting on with the 360. I want to be able to do more things with a console than just game.

The Wii also looks promising in that it comes bundled with the Opera browser. Time will tell if surfing will be as cumbersome as in other alternative browsing methods (PSP & cellphones...)

I think the Wii could be good for web browsing due to the mouse like pointer but the problem will be the low resolution of TVs.
